Recipe of the week March 3rd... Indian food from Howard's Vegan Soap!

Howard’s world famous dahl!!

Dahl is typically an Indian dish and is made differently by every family. The world Dahl actually means lentil in Arabic. It is typically vegetarian, vegan even, and while it is typically quite spicy, it can easily be adjusted for your taste buds. I recommend using a curry powder purchased from a middle eastern supply place. And don’t be afraid to use a lot of it!! Most curry powders are at least slightly different and they are what really makes Indian dishes… soo as we have it, we’ll need:

1 cup dried green lentils
1 medium potato
Olive oil or coconut oil
1 hot pepper (optional)
1 sweet onion
4 cloves garlic
1 block tofu (optional)
1 cup chickpeas cooked (or canned) and drained
¼ to ½ cup curry powder
salt and pepper to taste

First, soak the lentils in water for fifteen minutes or so, then rinse and place them in a pot.

Cut the potato into small, bite sized chunks and add to the lentils.

Bring to a boil, the lower heat and simmer until potatoes are firm but soft.

Dice the onion, pepper, and garlic and place into a large frying pan with enough olive oil (or coconut oil) to cover.

Simmer vegetables on medium heat and add ¼ cup of curry powder while cooking.

When soft, combine the lentils, potato, tofu, and chickpeas in frying pan. Continue to cook on medium heat for 10 minutes or so. Add salt and pepper, then taste and add more spice as necessary.

Serve with hot sauce, rice, pita and/or flat bread, enjoy!
